Maintenance Tips:

Here you'll find a few ideas that I believe will make your computing experience a little less frustrating. We will of course be building the list as time permits. If you have any advice on computer maintenance, please email it to me and I will post them.

  • Get a Battery Backup / Surge Protector

Because of the wonderful electric service here in the Keys, I have found a decent battery/surge protector a must for my computer. It will not only help your frame of mind but your computer too. Computers do not like to be shut down improperly. An APC will not only give you time to save any work you have going, it will also prevent file corruption and lost information that might occurs when the power go out unexpectedly.

  • Keep your Anti-Virus up-to-date

An UP TO DATE Anti-Virus program is vital to the operation of a computer that uses the Internet. Norton and McAfee are both good programs but only if they are kept up to date. (I prefer Norton but it is a personal preference) To remove a virus can be costly and time consuming. Do yourself a favor and keep your Anti-Virus up to date. It could very well be the best $29.00 a year you send on your computer.

Emails are the most common way a virus is perpetuated. My best advice is DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS even if you know the person. Virus are often spread by attacking your email address book and sending out a message with the virus attached to all your friends and family without you even knowing it.

When a virus makes it's way on to your computer and it will, the best resource website I know of is www.sarc.com Here you will find information on almost any virus known to man (or woman).

  • Run scandisk about once a week

Find and click "My Computer on the "Desktop". right click the C drive > select properties from the drop down menu > Click tools for the taps at the top. Click the button check now in the "error checking" area.

  • Run disk defrag about once a month

This of course will depend on how often you add and delete information from your computer. You can access this interface the same way you did "scandisk". This time click Defragment now in the Defragmentation Status area.

There is a windows critical update that's available from the Microsoft site. Goto "start" and click "Windows Update" usually at the top of the menu.

The "klez.gen" virus is everywhere. Do yourself a favor and do not open any attachments from anyone. Also, make sure your antivirus program is updated and run it at least once a week.

If you or know someone in need of virus removal email or call 517-2800
