• Fight porn spam and other unwanted email with software from mailwasher.net it's free!

I downloaded this about 2 weeks ago after it was recommended to me by a bellsouth tech. There is a small amount of configuring to set it up but not much. If you have any trouble I'll help you with it. It seems to work pretty well nothing is going to remove all of the spam but this knocks it down to a manageable level. You actually "bounce" the unwanted email back to the sender which indicates an invalid email address to the spammer.

  • ELIMINATE POPUP WINDOWS with AnalogX POW. This program watches what windows the browser opens and then closes them without mercy. Because you tell POW what to close, you don't have to worry about closing a window that should be left open. Keep in mind that nothing is 100 percent effective, but with just a little bit of work, you can easily eliminate most of the pop-ups and pop-unders you encounter. This makes your surfing experience far more pleasurable. \ Mark Thompson is the mind behind AnalogX.

  • Downloading Files from the Internet
There is a wealth of "shareware" and "freeware" on the Internet today. The only trick to downloading files and applications from the Internet is remembering the name of the file and where you saved it. (so you can find it).Remember too, that most applications must be "installed" after downloading them to your hard drive.

When you find an application you would like to try, there is usually a "download" button somewhere close. Go ahead and click it. A small dialog box will pop up and give you the option of opening the file or saving it to your disk (meaning your hard drive or C:\). Choose "save to disc", after which another box will ask you where on your computer you want to save it ( look at the top of the dialog box and you should see "save in" followed by a field with a down arrow. Click the down arrow if you wish to save the file to a folder other than the default one listed in the field. Don't forget to look at the file name at the bottom of the dialog box so you will know what to look for after downloading the file.

  • I came across a great trick that's as simple as it is effective, and that anyone can use to battle many of the nasty worm viruses flying around the Internet these days.

Of course, the best way to ensure the integrity of your system is to install some good anti-virus software, but this little technique can give you and anyone on your email address contact list a bit of added protection.

When one of these destructive critters gets into your computer, the first thing it does is go to your email address book and send itself to all of the addresses listed there, thus infecting all your friends and contacts. The trick we're talking about won't keep the virus from getting into your computer - you should invest in some good anti-virus software for that - but it will stop the invader from using your address book to spread further, and will alert you that you have a worm in your system.

Here's what to do. Open your email address book and click on "New Contact" or "New Person", just the same as you would to add a new friend to your list. In the window where you would type your New Contact's FIRST name, type !000. (That's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeroes.). Then, in the window prompting you to enter the new email address, type the word WormAlert. Then complete your entry by clicking "Add", "Enter", "Save", etc.

Here is what you've done, and why it will work. The "name" !000 will automatically be placed at the top of your address book as Entry #1. This is entry where the worm virus will start in its effort to work its way down your email contact list. But when it tries to mail itself to !000, it will find itself undeliverable because of the phony email address (i.e. WormAlert) you entered. Thus the worm's first attempt to spread from your computer will fail, and it goes no further.

So you've just saved your family, friends and business contacts a possible tragedy - but what about your files and creations?

Here's the second great benefit of this simple procedure. When an email cannot be delivered from your computer, you are notified in your Inbox almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you will know right away that you have the worm in your system. In a scenario where time is often of the essence, you will be informed at the earliest moment, so that you can take the proper measures to deal with the virus.

  • a.) When you click on the Edit or Mail button in Internet Explorer 5, your computer launches a word processor or an email client, respectively. To modify which program Internet Explorer automatically launches, click Tools and select Internet Options. In the Internet Options window, click the Programs tab. Use the pull-down menus after each category, to change which program will open when you click the corresponding button.

  • b.) When surfing the Internet, you pick up a lot of temporary files that generally turn out to be more permanent than temporary. Internet Explorer offers the option of deleting these files as soon as you close the browser. To use this option, choose Tools, then Internet Options. When the dialog box opens, click the Advanced tab. Now, under the heading 'Security' select the check box labeled 'Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed'. Click OK to close the dialog box and apply your settings.
